Dynasty. That’s the word that would describe the Lipscomb Academy Boys Tennis team. No other team at Lipscomb Academy has won 25 straight games, except for the Boys Tennis team.

In the past three seasons, the team has gone 40-1, with a regular season record of 30-0, and a postseason record of 10-1. 3 straight District Championships, 3 straight Region Championships, Back-to-Back State Final Four appearances, and 2016 TSSAA State Champions. 44 years had past since the Lipscomb boys tennis team last won a State Championship (1972). Contributing to the recent success of the program has been the team’s depth. More importantly, the team is led by veteran coach, Dr. Lynn Griffith. Coach Griffith has coached on both the high school and collegiate level. He has a knack for winning, and winning in big moments. Coach Griffith says, “The worst thing we can do as a team is start counting (counting wins). When we start counting, we begin to stop playing.”

After losing three seniors in 2016, it was tough to tell whether the success would continue in 2017. This season, the LA tennis team has started where they left off. With a record of 5-0, they continue to dominate this season. Sam Hutcheson, a senior, is playing his 5th year on the team, but he is out until late April with a fractured wrist. Sam says, “With my fractured wrist, I shall hoist the 2017 State Championship Trophy.” Sam hopes to be back for postseason play in late April, and lead the charge to Murfreesboro for another State Title. While Sam is out, Senior Jackson Duncan is leading the team, and looks forward to the challenging matches ahead. After this season, Sophomores Brendan Fernandez and Josh Walkup will be leading the team along with Cameron Embry, a Junior. As the regular season comes to a close, it should be interesting seeing how the postseason matches play out. Will the team continue their winning ways? Come find out by seeing the success unfold!
